Chapter Eleven

The first touch of his mouth to hers was nothing short of shocking. Her lips were soft, warm, and so intoxicatingly sweet.

Jake was only dimly aware of the crowd that watched their every move, but he was grateful for them. For if they were not there…

He savored the taste of her lips, relished the untutored way her mouth instinctively clung to his for that too-short kiss. Her breath fanned across his lips with a gasp as he pulled back slowly. Regretfully.

Oh yes, it was a very good thing this crowd was here as witness or else he might have lost his head entirely.

He might have tugged her into his arms and kissed her the way he wished to. With abandon. With tenderness. With all the aching emotion that was making his heart thud painfully in his chest.

She blinked up at him with dazed eyes, and his chest tightened so painfully, it was hard to breathe let alone speak.

“Are you all right?” he asked when he was finally able.

She blinked once more and gave a short nod, her brilliant blue eyes focusing on his as a smile curved her lips and a blush stole into her cheeks.

“Have we given them enough of a show?” she asked.

He laughed. “Most decidedly so.”

With a farewell wave to the raucous crowd, he took her by the elbow and led her into the dining room, which had only a few guests and the innkeeper’s wife as the others had all gathered ‘round the pianoforte.

“Are you hungry?” he asked.

“Ravenous,” she said.

He grinned as he watched her approach the table laden with meat pies, breads, and stew with undeniable relish.

He joined her and soon they had two plates piled high and found a place at the end of the large table where they could eat in peace, though the voices and music coming from the other room provided a festive backdrop to their meal.

Sarah regarded him with sparkling eyes. “I cannot believe you did that.”

He arched his brows. “Kiss you?”

Her cheeks turned crimson, which made his heart falter in response. She was adorable when she blushed.

“Not that,” she said, dropping her gaze shyly. “I meant, I cannot believe that you made a fool of yourself to spare me humiliation at the pianoforte.”

“Oh that,” he said.

“Yes that,” she shot back with a laugh. “That was quite noble of you.”

Still seated, he executed a short bow with an overly dramatic flourish of his hand. “At your service, my lady.”

She giggled and the sound had him dipping his head to hide a foolish grin.

He liked this side of her. Quite a bit. He liked her serious side too, of course, and even her temper when she so easily gave as good as she got. But seeing this—Sarah blushing, giggling, and glancing away shyly—he had the heartwarming notion that he was getting a glimpse of something few were ever allowed to see.

A sweet Sarah. A vulnerable Sarah. One who wasn’t hiding behind her intellect and her manners and was simply being herself.
